Netzbetreiber rüsten derzeit weltweit ihre UMTS-Netze mit HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) auf. Ab 2007 soll HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) die Leistungsfähigkeit der Datenübermittlung vom Mobiltelefon zur Basisstation verbessern. Doch damit ist die Weiterentwicklung von UMTS keineswegs abgeschlossen: 3GPP arbeitet bereits an einer Spezifikation für UMTS Long Term Evolution (LTE). Und Rohde & Schwarz ist vorne dabei auf dem Weg in die nächste Mobilfunkgeneration.
UMTS LTE soll die langfristige Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von UMTS für breitbandige Mobilfunkanwendungen oder mobiles TV sicherstellen. Im Downlink werden Datenraten bis zu 100Mbit/s, im Uplink bis zu 50 Mbit/s angestrebt. Dazu kommen deutliche Verbesserungen
