LibreOffice entstand aus der Zusammenarbeit von Entwicklern und Community der kürzlich gegründeten The Document Foundation. Diese geht zurück auf den bereits vor zehn Jahren bei der Gründung von OpenOffice.org gefassten Gedanken einer unabhängigen Stiftung.

LibreOffice bietet die gewohnte Funktionalität von OpenOffice, zielt aber auf eine größere Unabhängigkeit der Software-Entwicklung von kommerziellen Interessen.

Mit den Modulen Writer (Textverarbeitung), Calc (Tabellenkalkulation), Impress (Präsentationsprogramm), Draw (Grafikprogramm) und Base (Datenbankprogramm bietet es einen enormen Funktionsumfang, der professionellen Ansprüchen vollauf genügt.

Die Referenz behandelt alle Office-Programme: Writer, Calc, Base, Draw und Impress.
