Im November 2002 entstand an der Fakultät für Maschinenwesen an der TU München das Projekt TUfast e.V. aus einer Studenteninitiative. Angehende Ingenieure entwickeln unter realen Bedingungen ein Rennfahrzeug für den internationalen Wettbewerb "Formula SAE / Student". Dieses Projekt fordert Studenten verschiedener Universitäten dazu auf, den Prototypen eines Rennwagens herzustellen und Erlerntes schon vor dem Berufsstart in die Praxis umzusetzen. Bewertet wird dabei nicht nur der schnellste Rennwagen, sondern auch die Kriterien Sicherheit, Konstruktion, Kostenplanung sowie Fahrverhalten und Spritverbrauch. Die Tauglichkeit muss dann im internationalen Wettbewerb in einem Rennen mit bis zu 100 Konkurrenten über eine Distanz von 22 km bewiesen
