Der gegenwärtige Trend - vor allem in der Automobilindustrie – zur Fertigung in Leichtbauweise mit neuen Materialien verlangt nach angepassten und optimierten Fügeverfahren. Das Fügen von höher- und hochfesten Stählen und Magnesium ist sehr viel versprechend jedoch zur Zeit nur mittels Laserstrahlschweißen technisch sinnvoll. Traditionelle Fügeverfahren zerstören oft die gewünschten Material­eigenschaften oder erreichen nicht die erforderlichen Verbindungs­steifigkeiten. Wegen hoher Investitionskosten für die Laserquelle und Anforderungen an die Spanntechnik ist das automatisierte Laserstrahlschweißen jedoch häufig zu teuer. Besonders für die Reparatur und Instandhaltung langlebiger Produkte müssen alternative Konzepte entwickelt werden.
