European industry federation support for today's protest action regarding sacked workers at Lindsey (UK)
They call on Total management to act in a socially responsible manner and sit down with all parties, using ACAS conciliation to resolve the dispute - as requested by the UK unions and recommended by Lord Mandelson, the Secretary of State for Business and Innovation.
EMF, EFBWW and EMCEF will also bring this matter to the attention of all their members and ask them to also send messages of solidarity and support.
Following on from our joint position published in February 2009*, we will continue to monitor the situation at Lindsey closely and reiterate our demand for respect for the right to organise, represent and defend workers under collectively agreed terms and conditions.
EMF, EFBWW and EMCEF also reiterate the call to politicians at national and EU levels to redress the imbalance created by the recent ECJ cases between fundamental workers' rights and internal market freedoms by revising the Posting of Workers' Directive allowing for the equal treatment of domestic and foreign workers.
In addition we are requesting that all our affiliates alert the UK unions if they receive any information relating to requests for contract labour whose destination is the UK. We are concerned that the use of further contract labour will enflame an already explosive situation.
