EMF welcomes Commissioner Tajani's initiative in support of shipbuilding in Europe

(PresseBox) (Brussels, ) For more than three years the EMF has called for reliable access to finance, support for sustainable and environmentally friendly technical solutions and an integrated industrial strategy for shipbuilding activities in Europe.

In a press conference following today's meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council, Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry Antonio Tajani answered that call, and announced a series of measures aimed at supporting Europe's ailing shipbuilding industry. Measures foreseen include an increase of state aid granted for environmentally sustainable ships from 20% to 30%, more flexible access to finance through the European Investment Bank (EIB) and an extension and review of the industrial policy strategy for shipbuilding ("Leadership 2020").

The EMF welcomes these proposals and calls on the Member States and all stakeholders to support the initiative taken by Commissioner Tajani in order to safeguard jobs in European shipyards and strengthen the shipbuilding industry in Europe.

The EMF is the representative body defending the interests of workers in the European metal industry. The EMF has a mandate for the external representation and coordination of the metalworkers' unions and a mandate to engage in bargaining at European level.
