Fast zwei Drittel der Unternehmen in Deutschland engagieren sich für die Gesellschaft. Dies zeigt eine Erhebung des Instituts der deutschen Wirtschaft Köln (IW) für den ersten Engagementbericht der Bundesregierung "Für eine Kultur der Mitverantwortung", der von einer Sachverständigenkommission der Bundesregierung unter dem Vorsitz von IW-Direktor Professor Dr. Michael Hüther erstellt wurde. Demnach haben die Unternehmen im Jahr 2011 mindestens 11,2 Milliarden Euro für gute Zwecke ausgegeben. Das Gros davon machen Geldspenden (8,5 Milliarden) oder Sachspenden (1,5 Milliarden) aus; auf die kostenfreie Überlassung betrieblicher Infrastruktur entfallen 900 Millionen Euro.
