USB hat sich von einer einfachen "gemeinsamen Schnittstelle" für einige Peripheriegeräte zu einer vielseitigen, universellen Hochgeschwindigkeitsschnittstelle für alle externen Geräte, einschließlich Bildschirmen und Massenspeichergeräten, entwickelt.

Rudolf Sosnowsky, Leiter CTO HY-LINE Computer Components zeigt in einem Whitepaper die Entwicklung von USB von der Version 1.1 bis zur neuesten USB4 auf. Dabei werden Bandbreiten und Signalmanagement (Alternate Modes) sowie der Wendestecker für USB Type-C beschrieben.

USB4 vereint die Eigenschaften der bisherigen USB-Linie bis USB 3.2 mit denen von Thunderbolt 3 und bietet die gemeinsame Übertragung von Hochgeschwindigkeits-USB, DisplayPort-Grafiken, PCIe-Lade-/Speicherfunktionen und Host-zu-Host-Verbindungen bei Rückwärtskompatibilität zu bisherigen Generationen.
