Laut WWEA (World Wind Energy Association) werden weltweit für 2011 43,9 GW Neuinstallationen erwartet. Der Zuwachs für das erste Halbjahr 2011 lag 15 % über den Vorjahreswerten. Die Stromerzeugung aus Windenergieanlagen wächst also weltweit weiterhin stark. Die aktuellen Multi-Megawatt-Windenergieanlagen stellen dabei sehr hohe Anforderungen an die Tragfähigkeit des Untergrundes und an ihre Fundamente. Durch die standortbezogene Optimierung der WEA-Fundamente sowie den Einsatz von Verfahren zur Baugrundverbesserung lassen sich häufig Einsparpotenziale bei der WEA-Gründung realisieren. Ein Verzicht auf umfangreiche Baugrunderkundung im Vorfeld kann später zu erheblichen Mehrkosten führen. Das Zusammenspiel zwischen WEA-Auslegung und Gründungskonzept ist bei der Begutachtung von entscheidender Bedeutung.
