Hamamatsu stellt mit der ORCA R2 Kamera das Nachfolgemodell der erfolgreichen ORCA AG Kamera vor. Basierend auf dem gleichen CCD Sensor, dem Interline Transfer CCD Typ ER-150 mit 1344x1024 Pixeln, wurde die ORCA R2 für anspruchsvolle Anwendungen in der Lichtmikroskopie, insbesondere der Fluoreszenzmikroskopie entwickelt.

Der ER-150 CCD Chip unterscheidet sich gegenüber Standard-CCDs, wie dem Sony ICX285, durch eine höhere Empfindlichkeit im roten und nahen IR Bereich und durch sehr niedrige Signalartefakte bei langen Belichtungszeiten. In der ORCA R2 wird der Sensor in einer hermetisch abgeschlossenen Vakuumkammer bei -35°C betrieben.Wahlweise kann mittels zusätzlicher Wasserkühlung auch eine Betriebstemperatur von -40°C erreicht werden.
