Auf dem Gebiet der Krebsdiagnostik muss das Gewebe häufig erst in kleine Stücke geschnitten werden, um auf herkömmlichen Objektträgern untersucht werden zu können, obwohl größere Gewebeschnitte für die Diagnose von Vorteil wären.

Zusätzlich können die meisten Hochdurchsatz-Scanner nur normal große Objektträger digitalisieren, während die Verarbeitung von Objektträgern doppelter Größe nur einigen Single-Scan Systemen vorbehalten bleibt. Jedoch gibt es bisher kein System auf dem Markt das große Objektträger vollautomatisch einscannen kann – bis jetzt.

Hamamatsu Photonics ist der erste Hersteller der einen WSI (Whole Slide Images) Scanner speziell für den Hochdurchsatz von 76 x 52 mm großen Glasträgern entwickelt hat. Der
