Neben der klassischen Anwendung von Solarzellen auf Dächern und Freiflächen, können solche Bauelemente auch für eine effiziente Energieübertragung mit Laserlicht genutzt werden. Auf der 48. IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference demonstrierten Forscherinnen und Forscher des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Solare Energiesysteme ISE, wie sie mit einer Laserleistungszelle unter monochromatischem Licht einen photovoltaischen Rekordwirkungsgrad von 68,9% erzielen. Hierfür nutzte das Forscherteam eine sehr dünne Solarzelle aus Galliumarsenid, die sie mit einem hochreflektierenden, leitfähigen Rückseitenspiegel versahen.
