Mit Power over Ethernet (PoE) können VoIP-Telefone, IP-Kameras, Wireless Access Points, IoT (Internet of Things) Devices und viele weitere Geräte mit Strom und Daten über die vorhandene LAN-Infrastruktur versorgt werden. Um dem Leistungshunger der neuen Geräte gerecht zu werden, hat die IEEE-Arbeitsgruppe 802.3bt mit PoE++ einen leistungsstärkeren PoE-Standard und ein Verfahren verabschiedet, das auf vier Adernpaaren basiert und mit dem Leistungen von 49 W (Level 3) und bis zu 96 W (Level 4) an den Powered Devices (PD) zur Verfügung stehen. Dieses Verfahren ist auch als 4 Pair Power over Ethernet (4PPoE) bekannt.
