Dr. Nick Economou und Bill Ward von der US-Tochter der Carl Zeiss SMT AG in Peabody (Massachussetts) haben in diesem Jahr den renommierten "Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Award" für die Entwicklung des ORION™ Helium-Ionen-Mikroskops erhalten. Der Award wurde in der Kategorie "Materialien und andere Basistechnologien" verliehen. Das Wall Street Journal schreibt in seiner Begründung: "Die Technologie der Helium-Ionen-Mikroskopie ver- spricht eine signifikant verbesserte Bildauflösung im Vergleich zu den eingeführten Elektronen- mikroskopen."
