CAN in Automation (CiA) hat die Spezifikation CiA 602-2 als Draft Standard Proposal (DSP) herausgegeben. Sie beschreibt, wie man J1939-Parametergruppen in CAN FD-Telegramme transportiert. CAN FD-Nachrichten haben eine maximale Länge von 64 byte; klassische J1939-Nachrichten sind immer 8 byte lang. Die Idee ist einfach: Die 8-bit-Quelladdresse des J1939-Protokolls wird im CAN-Identifier übertragen. Im CAN FD-Datenfeld werden ein oder mehrere sogenannte C-PDUs (contained protocol data unit) übertragen. C-PDUs bestehen aus einem 32-bit-Header sowie den Nutzdaten (1 bis 60 byte). Das C-PDU-Format ist im Header am Type-of-Service erkennbar. Zusätzlich sind im Header noch die J1939-Zieladresse sowie die Länge der Nutzdaten kodiert.
