CiA-Mitglieder (CAN in Automation) haben ein CANopen-Profil für Serviceroboter-Steuerungen (CiA 460) und die Spezifikation CiA 318 herausgegeben, in der die Integration von CANopen-Netzwerken in eine RTC-Umgebung (Robot Technology Component) beschrieben ist. RTC ist ein generisches "Framework" für verteilte Robotersteuerungen, das von der nicht gewinnorientierten OMG-Gruppe veröffentlicht wurde. Es wird vor allem in einigen japanischen Serviceroboter-Forschungsprojekten verwendet. Um preisgünstige CANopen-Produkte (z. B. Sensoren und Servocontroller) einsetzen zu können, wurden die oben erwähnten Spezifikationen entwickelt. Die CANopen-Robotersteuerung bildet die über das Netzwerk angeschlossenen Geräte in Komplentärprofilen ab. Dadurch wird die Integration von CANopen-Geräten in ein komplexeres RTC-System vereinfacht, das aus mehreren Sub-Systemen
