CAN in Automation (CiA) hat die Spezifikation CiA 309 veröffentlicht. Der erste Teil spezifiziert die Kommunikationsdienste auf der TCP/IP-Seite des CANopen-TCP/IP-Gateways.

Der zweite Teil wurde gemeinsam mit der ModbusTCP-Organisation entwickelt; er spezifiziert die ModbusTCP-Protokolle für den Zugriff auf die CANopen-Geräte. Die generischen ASCII-Protokolle sind im dritten Teil spezifiziert. Alle Teile sind von der CiA-Webseite kostenlos herunterladbar.

„Der zunehmende Wunsch CANopen mit TCP/IP-basierenden Netzwerken zu verbinden, erfordert standardisierte Zugriffe auf CANopen-Geräte über ein entsprechendes Gateway,“ sagte Holger Zeltwanger, geschäftsführendes CiA-Vorstandsmitglied. Über solche Gateways können TCP/IP-Geräte CANopen-Geräte steuern, konfigurieren oder diagnostizieren. Die ASCII-Protokolle werden bereits in Paketverteilanlagen, Gewächshäuser sowie in Windkraftanlagen
