„Klimafreundlich Kühlen im Supermarkt“ – das war Thema einer internationalen Konferenz des Bundesumweltministeriums und des Umweltbundesamtes (UBA) Ende Mai 2007 in Berlin. Wie die Kühlung von morgen im Supermarkt aussehen soll, berieten etwa 150 Teilnehmer aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Wissen- schaft. Ein wesentliches Ergebnis: Im Supermarkt lässt sich klimafreundlich kühlen, falls das natürliche Kältemittel Kohlendioxid zum Einsatz kommt. Nach Meinung vieler Experten ist Kohlendioxid das am besten geeignete Kältemittel: Es ermöglicht energieeffiziente Kälteanlagen und ist wesentlich weniger klimaschädlich als die bislang eingesetzten fluorierten Treibhausgase. So schädigt das Kältemittelgemisch R 404A das Klima rund 3.300 Mal stärker als Kohlendioxid.
