Ab dem 01. August 2006 gilt eine neue Besteuerung für Biokraftstoffe. Für Biodiesel in Reinform sind dann zehn Cent pro Liter fällig, Biodiesel als Beimischkomponente und Pflanzenöl bei Verwendung als Kraftstoff werden mit 15 Cent pro Liter besteuert. Die bisherige Regelung für Erdgas und Autogas soll beibehalten werden. Danach ist Erdgas bis zum 31. Dezember 2020 und Autogas bis zum 31. Dezember 2009 steuerlich begünstigt. Der Erdgasindustrie nützt ein Bestandsschutz, nach dem die Erdgaswirtschaft in Vertrauen auf die gegenwärtige Gesetzeslage umfangreiche Investitionen vorgenommen hat. Nur die in der Land- und Forstwirtschaft verwendeten reinen Biokraftstoffe bleiben weiterhin steuerfrei.
