Demnach lieferte ZTE im zweiten Quartal 2012 acht Millionen Smartphones aus und lag damit nur 0,5 Prozentpunkte hinter HTC und 1,4 Prozentpunkte hinter Nokia. Zudem landete ZTE erstmalig unter den Top Fünf der Smartphone-Anbieter.
Den IDC-Daten zufolge stiegen die Smartphone-Lieferungen ZTEs gegenüber dem Vergleichsquartal 2011 um 300 Prozent auf einen weltweiten Marktanteil von 5,2 Prozent, wobei der Großteil dieses Zuwachses auf das Konto des Stammlandes China sowie größerer westlicher Märkte wie Frankreich, Großbritannien und die USA geht.
Den Erfolg des Unternehmens als Smartphone-Hersteller begründet He Shiyou, Executive Vice President und Leiter der Terminal Division von ZTE mit den hoch qualifizierten und umfangreichen F&E-Ressourcen des Telekommunikationsanbieters. "Mit dem kürzlich in China, der Türkei und England eingeführten ZTE Grand X erweitern wir den mittleren und den Spitzenbereich an Handys, während wir auch ausgezeichnete einfachere Smartphones wie das ZTE Kis anbieten."
Für das ultimative Erlebnis des mobilen Internet wird ZTE in der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2012 das sehr dünne Quad-Core-Smartphone Grand Era auf den Markt bringen und damit weiter auf sein Ziel zustreben "2015 einer der drei Top-Handy-Hersteller zu werden".
Bereits Ende 2011 hatte ZTE mehr als 15 Millionen Smartphones ausgeliefert, 400 Prozent mehr als 2010 - und war nach Apple in diesem Segment zum Anbieter mit dem zweitschnellsten Wachstum aufgestiegen.
