An impressive example of the performance capability of YXLON CT systems and the broad range of applications within the portfolio of services on offer at YXLON application centers supplied the analysis of a historic hoard of gold, discovered in Diepholz County in Lower Saxony, Germany.
This remarkable find of precious metals was made during the course of archaeological excavation work which took place in April 2011 parallel to construction of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline for northern Europe. Following the preceding application of various methods of analysis, the unearthed block of soil containing the elements of the find was examined using a Y.CT linear accelerator system at the YXLON Application Center in Hattingen, Germany.
The outstanding result of the virtual 3D view obtained there was ultimately able to illustrate how this block of soil is composed and the kinds of metallic objects it encloses. The data served as the basis for creating a precise, three-dimensional model to support further work at the dig.
A reconstruction of the initial positioning was enabled solely due to the assistance of the YXLON CT scan and ensuing original model. They made a valuable contribution toward a better understanding of the circumstances at this historic hoard deposit.
Detailed reporting on this sensational find and the work performed by YXLON has taking place in the German journal "Denkmalpflege in Niedersachsen" ('Historical Monument Preservation in Lower Saxony'), as well as in several special features on TV.
