New TPM+ rotary actuator: more dynamic, shorter, smoother

Merged in a compact unit: superior dynamics and up to 20 percent shorter

(PresseBox) (Igersheim, )
Twelve months ago, developers and engineers at WITTENSTEIN motion control GmbH were unanimously agreed: "We can't possibly make it any smaller!". An enhanced version of the TPM rotary actuator was unveiled late last year as a very large-scale integrated product - and enthusiastically acclaimed as an exceptionally small but nevertheless highly dynamic gearhead motor that was only half the size of conventional motor/gearhead combinations. More than 20,000 TPM servo actuators have meanwhile been successfully installed in a host of applications where dynamics and volume are a top priority. Yet the latest TPM+ generation easily beats the already impressive characteristics of its predecessor: thanks to an ingenious concept, it has been possible to further reduce the required installation space by as much as 20 percent. This tiny miracle of a motor with its precision planetary gearhead also integrates several other technological improvements, establishing a formidable reputation for superior power density and maximum dynamic response. Shorter ...

More than ever before, the new TPM+ merges the planetary gearhead and AC servo motor into a single unit: the sun wheel and the rotor shaft are connected without a coupling. Thanks to shrewd engineering, developers in the WITTENSTEIN Group have succeeded in cutting installation space by a further 20 percent. The result is undeniably impressive: not a single millimetre of volume is wasted by TPM+ - and the length saving compared to conventional motor/gearhead combinations is now well over half!

Smoother…

In addition to the basic features, including a resolver, the latest encoder generations from Heidenhain and Sick Stegmann have significantly contributed to reducing the overall length. The maintenance-free permanent magnet brakes are now also seamlessly connected to the stator.

The helical-toothed precision planetary gearheads guarantee exceptionally quiet operation with practically no vibration.

More dynamic …

Extraordinary rangeability is achieved in conjunction with the high torsional stiffness and the coupling-free integration of the motor and gearhead. Applications with a ratio of external to intrinsic moment of inertia in excess of 50 are now an altogether realistic vision. Allied to the excellent overall efficiency, this high coupling factor facilitates cooling with natural convection where water cooling would normally be obligatory.

More features at a glance:

- Gearhead backlash can now be reduced to under 1 arcmin
- The drive components, such as a pinion, belt pulley and rotary indexing tables, are directly mounted to the standardized output flange
- An additional bearing can be dispensed with thanks to the strong output bearing
- Prefabricated cables and installation instructions are available for more than 20 servo controllers for ultra-simple commissioning in matter of minutes

Applications

The new TPM+ is ideal for use in robotics (as an axis drive for painting robots or a part-turn actuator for the production of optical media and semiconductors), automation and packaging machines (for example, as an actuator for compressing hygiene articles), as well as for driving metering pumps in machine tools or woodworking machines (tool changer).

A stylish product offering tangible benefits

Last but not least, the new TPM+ has been enhanced with a new look - renowned product designers from the automotive industry were asked to subject the rotary actuator to a close scrutiny. Their creative minds provided inspiration for WMC's development engineers to design TPM+ - without any impairment to the precision or quality of the gearhead motor itself and certainly not to its functionality. Quite the contrary: the pleasing visual effect created by this key machine component - due especially to the rounded "corners" with practically no edges whatsoever - also means the new TPM+ is less sensitive to dirt. Yet another success story that reflects the WITTENSTEIN motion control motto: "Intelligence in motion"!
