Improving the reliability and efficiency of ship automation with the u-remote remote I/O system.

u-remote, the innovative remote I/O concept from Weidmüller, has been approved for use in the maritime and offshore sector: DNV GL (formerly Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd), Bureau Veritas (BV), Lloyds Register (LR) and Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) are the first international classification societies to certify the use of the innovative remote I/O system in this demanding environment. The certification is valid for almost all areas on a ship, including the ship’s bridge, which is subject to particularly high demands. u-remote represents a fully integrated, reliable and efficient automation solution for a range of applications, with extensive certification now provided for use on ships.

There are various parameters that need to be checked, monitored and managed on ships. Fully integrated but flexible automation systems therefore offer significant benefits when used on ships and can be used for a range of tasks. u-remote is a highly integrated I/O concept and is also particularly user-friendly. It combines a high level of performance with optimum system handling. What’s more, it boasts a robust design suited to both the sensitive and harsh environmental conditions found on a ship, as well as a wide range of temperatures (-20°C to 60°C). It can withstand high levels of humidity (up to 100%), intense vibration (up to 4 g) and high-energy electromagnetic fields, without emitting high levels of radiation that could affect other devices.

Direct and fast error diagnosis is ensured thanks to intuitively designed LEDs, while status indicators are positioned on each module for module-dependent status indication as well as individual sensor/actuator diagnosis on a given channel. u-remote also provides maximum fieldbus compatibility and comprehensive process diagnostics. Fieldbus couplers are available for Profibus, Profinet, EtherCat, Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, CANopen and POWERLINK, enabling customised system adaptation and trouble-free migration at I/O level on the most commonly used network protocols. Switching the fieldbus coupler is all that is required, while the system structure with up to 64 I/O modules remains intact.

A web server integrated in the fieldbus coupler also allows for the simple and fast checking of a system’s status and the analysis of diagnostic messages – either on site via the built-in service interface or remotely via network access. Additional features of the web server include the simulation of input states and the forcing of outputs, which support faster system commissioning and minimise the risk of errors during installation. u-remote requires no special software to perform these functions, simply a standard browser. In addition to simplified, phased commissioning, this also speeds up servicing in the event of unplanned downtime or scheduled maintenance.

A major benefit of u-remote lies in the fact that the IP20 system can be directly connected to the IP67 sub-bus modules. Thanks to the innovative IP20 gateway module, the fieldbus-neutral IP67 sub-bus system can be combined with all available u-remote fieldbus couplers. As a result, users only need a single IP67 system and can migrate the entire system by simply switching the coupler to another fieldbus.

The modular and flexible I/O system also delivers an impressive performance in the maritime sector. As with industrial plants, the trend towards decentralisation has proven to be unstoppable, with it becoming increasingly common to retrieve and transfer signals directly on the sensors or actuators. The remote I/O modules from Weidmüller with IP20 and IP67 protection ratings represent the ideal solutions in such situations, as their compact design and impressively wide range of functions mean that they save on valuable space and allow for control cabinets to be combined or scaled down in size. Users can position up to 15 IP67 I/O modules over a total distance of 50 metres, thus making signal connection considerably more flexible, particularly in harsh environments. The remote I/O sub-bus system with IP67 protection rating is also characterised by its high levels of resistance to environmental influences, and is designed for maximum performance. This opens up decisive advantages for modular machines and systems, ranging from use in the engine room to installation on the ship’s bridge.
