„Kristina Spohrs brillante Analyse besticht durch einen in Deutschland nur selten zu findenden globalen Blick auf Helmut Schmidt“, betont der Initiator der Veranstaltung Prof. Dr. Sönke Neitzel. „Das Buch beleuchtet ihn erstmals in seiner ganzen weltpolitischen Bedeutung. Ein Muss für alle zeithistorisch interessierten Leser.“ Der im letzten Jahr verstorbene SPD-Politiker war von 1974 bis 1982 Bundeskanzler der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und erkannte als solcher früh die Tragweite der Globalisierung. Schmidt war an der Einführung der G7-Gipfeltreffen zu Fragen der Weltwirtschaftspolitik sowie des Europäischen Währungssystems (EWS) beteiligt. Auf ihn geht außerdem der „NATO-Doppelbeschluss“ als Reaktion auf die sowjetische Aufrüstung im Bereich der Mittelstreckenraketen zurück, durch den er zum Zusammenhalt der Allianz und zur Entschärfung des Kalten Krieges beitrug.
Für das Buch hat Kristina Spohr intensiv in Schmidts Privatarchiv sowie zahlreichen europäischen und amerikanischen Archiven geforscht. Auf Basis dieser Recherchen sowie persönlicher Gespräche mit dem Altkanzler bis kurz vor seinem Tod, porträtiert sie den Weltpolitiker vor dem Hintergrund seiner Zeit.
