Aufgerufen sind alle Schüler, Lehrer, Studenten und Bürger der Stadt Jena. Gemeinsam sollen sie ein "5000 Meter + X"-langes Mathebuch gestalten. Für eine jeweils vier Quadratmeter große Fläche hat jeder Akteur zwei Stunden Zeit. Dazu wird die Schnellstraße stadtauswärts am Freitag von 7 bis 16 Uhr gesperrt. Ein Fotografenteam begleitet den Rekordversuch. Nach der Veröffentlichung im Internet werden die besten 400 Seiten in einem Buch zusammengefasst. Kultusminister Müller ruft alle Jenenser und Jenaer zur Teilnahme auf: "Mathematik fördert das Denk- und Abstraktionsvermögen sowie Ausdauer und Kreativität. Wer verstehen will, was die Welt im Innersten zusammenhält, braucht Mathematik. Ihre Schlüsselposition im technischen Zeitalter ist unbestritten, ihre Bedeutung für die Zukunft unseres Landes kann nicht genug schätzt werden. Dass die Faszination für Mathematik gerade im Freistaat hoch ist, zeigt die rege und erfolgreiche Teilnahme an Wettbewerben wie der Mathematikolympiade, dem Bundeswettbewerb Mathematik, dem Adam-Ries-Wettbewerb oder dem Känguru-Wettstreit. Den besonderen Stellenwert dieses Faches hebt auch der Guinness-Weltrekordversuch 'Das größte Mathebuch der Welt' hervor. Der Aktion wünsche ich viel Erfolg."
