Thomson Launches Next Generation Broadband Residential Gateway

THOMSON TG797n combines high-speed broadband, wireless voice over IP and 802.11n for wireless video streaming in the home

(PresseBox) (Berlin, )
Thomson (Euronext 18453; NYSE: TMS) today announced details of its next generation broadband residential gateway – the TG797n. Capable of supporting the wireless streaming of high-definition video around the home and multiple line voice over IP services, the THOMSON TG797n is designed to enable telecoms operators to deliver the next generation of entertainment and Internet services to customers. The THOMSON TG797n brings together many of Thomson’s recent innovations in broadband voice, entertainment and information services and is its most feature-rich device ever.

Advanced Services in the Digital Home
The THOMSON TG797n has an extended voice feature set, enabling the telecom operator to configure up to 15 numbers in the gateway. The gateway supports up to five DECT handsets simultaneously. On top of voice, the THOMSON TG797n supports the WiFi 802.11n standard for the live streaming of high-definition TV and video to televisions and other devices across the home. But it’s not just these services that can be enjoyed as UPnP functionality enables all manner of multimedia content to be shared across any home device in the residential gateway ecosystem.

“High-speed Internet and home networking is revolutionising the way we live, work and play. Broadband has enabled a new generation of home workers, voice over IP is now an everyday service for hundreds of millions of people while high-quality video over IP services are available across the globe and experiencing tremendous consumer take up,” said Romain Waller, General Manager, IP Premises Systems business unit, Thomson. “With products such as the THOMSON TG797n we are continuing to extend the range of broadband-based services and features, such as wireless high-definition TV streaming, that telecoms providers can deliver to their customers.”

The THOMSON TG797n offers a complete range of connectivity for the home, with up to four Ethernet ports for connecting PCs and IPTV set-top boxes and two USB ports for printers and storage devices. The gateway also includes Thomson’s wideband audio codec for high-definition sound, providing CD-quality sound for voice over IP calls. The wireless DECT phones can also be used to remotely control other devices attached to the THOMSON TG797n, such as the THOMSON Music Box, and is configured to receive information services such as news, weather, travel and local business details. Two new HD Sound DECT phones models can also be integrated with the new THOMSON TG797n gateway – the THOMSON TH52 and THOMSON TH58 – and will be available in Q1’2008.

Higher Speed, More Power and Even Simpler to Deploy
The incorporation of ADSL 2+ technology enables telecoms operators to deliver high-speed broadband up to 24 Mbps. With higher processing power and more memory, the new product range offers a future-proof platform for new services. Furthermore, the integration of many of the key technology standards developed by the DSL-Forum, ensure that the product is simple and cost-effective for operators to deploy and manage remotely. The TR-69 remote management provides for remote installation and service upgrades for this “expandable” gateways. While a user-friendly installation wizard and icon-based graphical interface enables consumers to easily add news devices and services. An integrated firewall and content filter provides high levels of security from Internet threats.

Thomson will demonstrate its TG797n on stand at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin from the 9th – 11th of October as part of an ecosystem of home entertainment and communications devices.
