Thomson Launches Complete Media Center Gateway

Unique device combines in one innovative home media center, a residential broadband gateway with integrated DECT handset, the THOMSON WiFi multimedia tablet and integrated storage

(PresseBox) (BErlin, )
Thomson (Euronext 18453; NYSE: TMS) today launched its MediaCenterGateway, the first home media hub integrated in a DSL gateway to enter the market. This unique device will support the delivery of advanced triple play services and enable telecoms operators to offer their customers a complete entertainment and communications hub for the home.

The home entertainment center provides broadband access and VoIP services, with multimedia applications to enable the sharing of content to and from the hard disk or PC to all WiFi and Ethernet connected devices, such as televisions, DECT handsets supporting CAT-iq, PC or even an MP3 player. Through UPnP AV standards and DLNA technology, media consumption in the home has become more simplified and requires no installation from the end user anymore. Different multimedia control points that can seamlessly be connected to the Media Center Gateway – PDA’s, mobile phones - ensure an enriched user experience.
In addition to content sharing, the MediaCenterGateway is also designed for content storage and synchronization whether on the gateway or in the operator network. The gateway also boasts an 802.11n WiFi connection for streaming music and video around the home, whether to the integrated 802.11g wireless multimedia tablet or other devices. The portable THOMSON WiFi Tablet is designed to deliver IPTV services throughout the home, without the need to deploy multiple set-top boxes and associated cabling.

This unique hub enables service providers to offer up to fifteen dedicated telephone numbers through a single gateway and support up to five wireless phones simultaneously. Thomson’s wideband audio codec for high-definition sound ensures CD-quality sound for voice over IP calls.

“The latest generation of high-bandwidth broadband and wireless home networking technologies are bringing forward a revolution in home entertainment and communications. People are consuming digital music and video in ever greater quantities and broadband operators are perfectly positioned to deliver the connected home network and associated services that can bring everything together in a user-friendly and convenient package,” said Bruno Fabre, Vice President, Premises Systems at Thomson. “The THOMSON MediaCenterGateway will provide our clients with a fully integrated platform for delivering the connected home entertainment and communications experience to their customers, and enable operators to tap new revenue streams as the platform drives greater media consumption throughout the digital home” he continued.

A new concept finalist at the InfoVision Awards
Thomson’s MediaCenterGateway has already received the considerable accolade of being nominated as a finalist in the New Product Concepts category of the InfoVision Awards.
The awards, which are judged by members of the Broadband Worldwide Forum, pay tribute to the technologies, applications, products, advances and services deemed to be the most unique and beneficial to the information and communications technology industry. The International Engineering Consortium (IES) will announce the award winners at the Broadband Worldwide Forum in Berlin at 11.30 am on 9th October immediately after the keynote address.

The THOMSON MediaCenterGateway will be featured at Thomson’s stand at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin on the 9th- 11th October as part of an ecosystem of home entertainment and communications devices.
