Tellabs end-to-end solution delivers domino effect of benefits

Swisscom Mobile innovates by deploying solution simultaneously at the RNC and cell-site

When Swisscom Mobile faced the dual challenge of providing its growing number of users with fast, high-quality data services while controlling costs, the operator turned to what it does best: innovation. Already known as an early adopter of HSDPA technology, Swisscom Mobile signed a new contract for Tellabs solutions that will deliver a domino effect of benefits.

On-the-go Connectivity for Users
“Choosing the Tellabs® IntegratedMobileSM solution for our 3G migration enables us to expand our mobile data portfolio and develop new profitable revenue streams while controlling costs,” said Kurt Schmid, head of access platforms, Swisscom Mobile.

The operator will be able to offer more users in more locations innovative, scalable HSDPA services. Users in turn benefit by gaining fast, reliable access to Swisscom’s “Mobile Unlimited” services, with its key attraction of on-the-go connectivity to the Internet and corporate networks.

Pushing to the Edge
Pushing the Tellabs® 8600 Managed Edge System, a key part of the Tellabs IntegratedMobile Solution, to the network edge enables Swisscom Mobile to achieve a distinctive, end-to-end deployment. The company will deploy the Tellabs 8600 system in the Radio Network Controller (RNC) as well as cell-sites for end-to-end 3G migration. This double deployment provides double benefits: both capital and operational cost savings.

By pushing the Tellabs 8600 system further out into the cell-site, Swisscom Mobile can use pseudowire-based Ethernet for backhauling. Ethernet is more cost-efficient for new high-bandwidth services than renting traditional leased-lines.

10 Years and Counting
“This year we look back at 10 years of successful cooperation with Swisscom and our Swiss partner Miracom,” said Pat Dolan, Tellabs vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Good customer relationships coupled with solutions that deliver clear benefits are key strengths of Tellabs that make an impact on operators’ business.”

Reaffirming such good, long-established relationships triggers further benefits. Deploying the Tellabs 8600 system enables Swisscom Mobile to leverage existing operating procedures and skills by seamlessly integrating the new platform into its existing Tellabs equipment and the end-to-end Tellabs® 8000 Network Manager.
