Professor Jürgen Petzoldt und Professor Klaus Augsburg bekleiden die Ämter der Prorektoren seit 2004 und wurden darin zum fünften Mal bestätigt. "Mit dieser Kontinuität würdigt der Senat die bisherige Arbeit der gesamten Universitätsleitung", so der Rektor, Professor Peter Scharff, der ebenfalls seit 2004 an der Spitze der Universität steht. Scharff war bereits am 4. März durch Hochschulrat und Senat einstimmig zum Präsidenten der TU Ilmenau wiedergewählt worden. Präsident und Vizepräsidenten führen weiterhin die Bezeichnung Rektor und Prorektor, was ihnen gemäß Thüringer Hochschulgesetz möglich ist, da sie Professoren der eigenen Hochschule sind.
Prof. Peter Scharff dankte den beiden Prorektoren für die inzwischen zehnjährige vertrauensvolle Zusammenarbeit und wünschte dem gesamten Team eine weitere erfolgreiche Amtszeit. Für die künftige gemeinsame Arbeit erläuterte er sein Konzept: "Meine Vorstellung der Technischen Universität Ilmenau ist eine international agierende und international sichtbare Forschungs- und Lehrinstitution, die darüber hinaus ihre entscheidende Rolle bei der gedeihlichen Entwicklung der regionalen Wirtschaft wahrnimmt."
