Bei dem Bau der Wanne mit einer Tagesproduktion von bis zu 500 to (15 - 18 Millionen m² Jahresproduktion) wird in vieler Hinsicht Neuland betreten. So wird erstmals ein Konzept umgesetzt, das die Produktion sowohl von strukturiertem Gussglas (für herkömmliche Siliziummodule) als auch von Flachglas für Dünnschicht- und Solarthermiemodule in einer „Dualwanne“ erlaubt.
Eine Weltneuheit ist auch der Betrieb der Wanne mit einem Sauerstoff-Gasgemisch. Dadurch werden ca. 25 % des teuren Erdgases eingespart und die Emissionen sind ca. 50 % geringer. Die Wanne kann daher mit Recht als umweltfreundlich eingestuft werden! Technologiepartner der SolarGlas AG sind neben dem erfahrenen Ingenieurunternehmen dtec aus Gelsenkirchen überwiegend renommierte deutsche Unternehmen mit viel Erfahrung in der Glasindustrie. Die Sauerstoffversorgung sowie das besondere Know-how zur Brennertechnologie werden von der Linde AG bereitgestellt. Die auf das Leasing großer Produktionsanlagen spezialisierte Süddeutsche Leasing GmbH aus Ulm sichert die Finanzierung zu.
Die Investition wird einschließlich vor- und nachgelagerter Stufen mehr als 60 Mio. Euro umfassen und ca. 120 neue Arbeitsplätze in einem strukturschwachen Gebiet neu schaffen. Das erste Glas soll im Juni 2009 das Werk verlassen und insbesondere an die vielen Solarmodulproduzenten im Umkreis von nur ca. 150 km von Forst ausgeliefert werden. Derzeit werden schon die ersten Gespräche über langfristige Lieferverträge geführt, erste Abschlüsse sind in Vorbereitung.
