After almost three years of Software AG's University Relations Program, the company is seeing positive results. More than 280 departments at over 100 universities throughout Germany have taken part in the program so far. More than 2,800 students have gone through the program and received expert knowledge on Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) and Business Process Management (BPM). The company is projected to exceed its goal training of 3,000 students by the end of 2010. The result: The number of IT professionals in Germany with SOA/BPM expertise will have quadrupled since 2007. Software AG further noted that the country cannot neglect the education and training of tomorrow's skilled professionals, especially against the backdrop of this economic crisis. SOA and BPM are considered pioneering technologies in the software industry, technologies that companies can use to modernize their IT systems.
Software AG joined forces with Annette Schavan, Germany's Federal Minister of Education and Research, and Darmstadt's universities to launch the pilot phase of the University Relations Program back in May 2007. Minister Schavan called the project an "exemplary initiative" at the time. The number of participating universities has grown by 50 times in not quite three years. Exactly 107 universities with 281 departments, distributed across 14 states throughout Germany, are partners in the program, including RWTH Aachen University, Technical University of Munich, University of Leipzig, Saarland University, and Technical University of Berlin as well as founding members Darmstadt University of Technology and Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. The latter is also a strategic partner of Software AG. Participating universities use the various offerings as modular units, from practical seminars to using the latest software developments to establishing student practicums.
So far more than 2,800 students have been able to expand their knowledge of SOA and BPM and at the same time gather practical experience with cuttingedge software. The SOA/BPM market is still considered a strategic growth market for Germany and Europe for years to come.
The universities are well aware of the value this adds to their programs. "If we want to succeed in training highlyqualified IT professionals, then universities and businesses need to work together more closely. This is a great way to give students firsthand, realworld experience. Software AG's University Relations Program is a positive step in the right direction," emphasized Prof. Hermann Krallmann, director of the Institute for Information Systems at TU Berlin, in February of last year.
Back in Darmstadt, people were convinced the entire program would be a success right from the start. Juergen Powik, director of University Relations and the person responsible for the University Relations Program, had this to say: "The IT industry cannot afford to make the mistakes of the past over again. After the Internet bubble burst, legions of specialists were laid off, and they were then missed. Even if we should face a similar situation again, which I do not anticipate, we must continue to make use of specialists' potential and ensure that there is enough new blood."
