Software AG Enables Cost-effective Modernization of Natural Applications with new Discovery Edition for Natural
- New discovery tool for Natural-based applications jumpstarts application modernization projects
- This webMethods Application Modernization Suite enhancement allows Natural customers to maximize the value of their IT investments and prepare their applications for serviceoriented and process-centric initiatives
- State of Minnesota plans rollout of Discovery Edition for Natural based on successful product test
Software AG, a global leader in business infrastructure software, today announced the expansion of the webMethods Application Modernization Suite with the introduction of Discovery Edition for Natural. By modernizing existing systems, organizations can drive business innovation and decrease maintenance demands without "ripping and replacing" current IT investments. Discovery Edition for Natural helps organizations automatically analyze and unlock complex applications written in Natural and enable reuse of code.
"Modernization is more important than ever in today's global economy. Organizations need to avoid unnecessary expenditures, especially when they have already made significant investments in building core systems," said Dr. Peter Kürpick, Chief Product Officer and Member of the Executive Board, Software AG. "The webMethods Application Modernization Suite, which now incorporates Discovery Edition for Natural, enables companies to transform and build on these investments to derive maximum value and achieve optimum cost savings, while at the same time providing a platform for growth."
Additionally, in an increasingly regulated business climate, organizations need to gain better insight into and control of applications that support critical business processes. "Companies must react quickly to comply with new and stringent regulatory mandates and changing competitive forces," Dr. Kürpick said. "At the same time, they are being pressured to improve operational efficiency and drive down expenses. Application modernization is a proven strategy to provide much-needed agility and transparency."
Many companies struggle with a lack of knowledge around legacy applications. Discovery Edition for Natural solves this problem and facilitates application modernization by providing detailed documentation and code analysis. Using Discovery Edition, companies gain an understanding of Natural applications, as well as the ability to extend existing IT investments and unlock proven business logic. These assets can then be used in new service-oriented and process-centric initiatives.
Based on the success of an initial product test, the State of Minnesota plans to utilize Discovery Edition for Natural in upcoming projects incorporating in excess of 320 files and 8 million lines of code. "It's simply too time-consuming and error-prone for our staff of around 50 developers to go through that code manually," said Tony Bokhorst, Technical Supervisor at the State of Minnesota.
The State expects to save significant development time regarding the preparation of documents and reports pertaining to impact analysis. "The task of analysis can be overwhelming," said Demos Economacos, Natural Developer at the State of Minnesota. "Discovery Edition for Natural is a powerful tool that provides fast, accurate, and unambiguous analysis of our own data."
The tool's capabilities will enable the State's developers to modernize stable and tested base code to improve their processes in a way that will also save time, increase accuracy, and enable knowledge transfer to Java developers. "Discovery Edition for Natural gives us the ability to easily analyze Natural code and provides graphical representation of impact analysis with just a few clicks," Tony Bokhorst added. "The prototype has already been very well received by those developers involved with the product test."
Discovery Edition for Natural analyzes Natural applications, parsing 30 million lines of code per hour. Using Discovery Edition, organizations generate in-depth diagrams, reports, metrics, and documentation detailing Natural applications. They can also identify and eliminate dead, inefficient, redundant, and non-standard code.
