Step-by-step training in injection molding production

From setter to specialist for the sampling of new tools

(PresseBox) (Würzburg, )
Injection molding production is a complex process that requires highly qualified specialists. Structured step-by-step training provides a clear career ladder that leads from set-up technician to specialist for the sampling of new tools.

The SKZ Plastics Center offers a further training portfolio in the field of injection moulding that is made up of several course units and enables a career perspective that builds on one another. The various courses can be booked individually and each imparts specific knowledge and skills. Course participants acquire the necessary tools to prepare them for the many challenges of injection molding production.

From the basics to becoming an expert
Entry into injection molding production often begins with training as a set-up technician. This position closes the gap between unskilled employees and trained setters or plastics technologists. The set-up technician is responsible for the economical and safe set-up of injection molds. The five-day course includes theoretical basics and a high practical component, which enables participants to carry out several set-up processes under supervision and ends with an examination. The tasks include set-up preparation, setting “zero points”, handling hot runners and mold maintenance.

After successfully completing their training as a setter, employees have the opportunity to progress to the position of setter. Setters are responsible for setting up and optimizing the injection moulding machines. They monitor the production process, carry out quality checks and rectify minor faults. This position requires a deep understanding of the machines and processes as well as the ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently. The necessary skills are taught in the two-part course to become a certified setter - injection molding. This comprises five days and a final examination.

The next step in the career ladder is the Process Optimizer Injection Moulding qualification, which builds on the Certified Setter qualification. This qualification can be achieved with seven additional days of compulsory modules and 1-3 days of optional modules. Process optimizers analyse and optimize production processes in order to increase efficiency and improve product quality. They work closely with the setters and use statistical methods and modern technologies to continuously improve the processes. Process optimizers require in-depth knowledge of plastics technology and experience in the analysis and optimization of production processes.

The highest qualification in the level training is the Certified Sampler of Injection Molding Tools. The course lasts five days and consists of the courses “Injection molding defects” and “Sampling of injection molds” and concludes with a final examination. Samplers are responsible for the initial sampling of new tools to ensure that they meet the quality requirements and are suitable for series production. They work closely with the development department and carry out extensive testing and analysis. This position requires in-depth knowledge of tool technology, experience in sampling and a high degree of precision and care.

“The step-by-step training offered in injection moulding production gives employees in the plastics industry the opportunity to continuously develop and acquire specialized skills, thus providing them with clear career prospects,” says Robert Held, Group Manager Injection Moulding Training. “I am delighted that we at the SKZ can thus make a decisive contribution to securing skilled workers.”
