Endurance test: security apps for 4 billion Android devices

(PresseBox) (Magdeburg, )
Experts, including Google, estimate that there are up to 4 billion Android devices in use that can run a security app – and they need one, too. After all, hacker attacks through infected apps are increasingly posing a risk to even unrooted devices. Often, these apps contain concealed exploits that expose vulnerabilities and attempt to take control of the device. Good security apps for Android devices prevent this happening by detecting the dangerous apps or simply blocking suspicious activity. The experts from AV-TEST tested security apps for devices running the Android operating system from July to December 2025 to determine which ones offered the best protection. In the semi-annual test, 10 security apps and Google Play Protect, Android’s built-in security system, revealed how effectively they can defend against thousands of attacks – or they exposed where attackers can slip through undetected.

Many experts agree that Android’s system structure does not make it particularly easy for the attackers. Yet, even this system suffers from vulnerabilities that are detected time after time – adding up to nearly 4 billion times. Resourceful attackers develop exploits that target these shortcomings and lodge themselves into the systems. A good security software designed for mobile devices running Android needs to monitor the systems, look for vulnerabilities and detect infected apps before they strike. If an attacker’s malware app successfully lodges itself into a device’s system, a security app can help detect malicious behavior. The system watchdogs leverage deep scanning and efficient heuristics to provide a good means of defense, even against complex threats – like when an initially harmless app is suddenly replaced by malware after an update. [...]

About the AV-TEST Institute

AV-TEST is an independent supplier of services in the fields of IT Security and Antivirus Research, focusing on the detection and analysis of the latest malicious software and its use in comprehensive comparative testing of security products.

Due to the timeliness of the testing data, malware can instantly be analyzed and categorized, trends within virus development can be detected early, and IT-security solutions can be tested and certified. The AV-TEST Institute’s results provide an exclusive basis of information helping vendors to optimize their products, special interest magazines to publish research data, and end users to make good product choices.

AV-TEST has operated out of Magdeburg (Germany) since 2004 and employs more than 30 team members, professionals with extensive practical experience. The AV-TEST laboratories include 500 client and server systems, where more than 3,500 terabyte of independently-collected test data, containing both malicious and harmless sample information, are stored and processed.
