Increasingly wide-ranging legislative measures for the reduction of CO2 emissions have for years been forcing manufacturers and operators of engines to continuously optimize the degree of efficiency and the performance of their combustion engines. Varying fuel qualities lead to knocking and misfiring, which in turn lead to low engine power, higher fuel consumption and higher levels of wear. Downtimes and maintenance costs should be substantially reduced with the aid of systems for proactive maintenance. This and other topics are increasing the demand for measurement and control technology as well as data management solutions for engines.

Development and production from a single source

For almost two decades now, Sensor-Technik Wiedemann (STW) has developed and produced cylinder pressure and common rail sensors for use in large diesel, gas and dual-fuel engines based on its own thin-film technology. Function layers especially developed for this application, particularly robust structural and connection technology and a patented procedure for the reduction of loads on the sensor membrane caused by the temperature shock wave occurring during the combustion process make STW sensors stand out against competitor products on the market.

In addition to new challenges regarding the robustness of measurement systems, for example through increasing peak pressures, the requirements on evaluation electronics are also becoming more stringent. The increasing and more complex utilization of cylinder pressure data in modern control systems is demanding components with an even higher performance in order to transfer the raw data very quickly to the superordinate control unit, or to provide ready-aggregated or analyzed data as smart data sensors.

An experienced novice in the sensor market for cylinder pressure

In order to adapt the products even more precisely to market requirements, STW will in future represent themselves independently on the market for cylinder pressure sensors. Through their collaboration with the OEMs of large engines, the latest requirements for the further development of measuring systems are to be taken into account. These requirements also include data management solutions in maritime and stationary engine applications. Therefore STW is now addressing customers in these sectors, both in the company’s own name and via partners.
