Mit dieser Zahl verteidigt die weltweit führende Domainhandelsplattform Sedo auch weiterhin ihre Spitzenposition im Domainbusiness. Das in Köln gegründete Unternehmen führt somit mit weitem Abstand und einer Datenbank, die dreimal größer ist als die des zweitgrößten Domainhandels-Unternehmens mit Sitz in den USA.
Beim Start der ersten Version der Domain-Handelsplattform im September 1999 standen gerade einmal einige Dutzend Domains zum Verkauf. „Nun haben wir die Grenze von 3 Millionen zum Verkauf stehender Domains erreicht, und wir erwarten zehn Millionen Domains innerhalb von zwei bis drei Jahren. Die stetig steigende Anzahl an Domains, die bei uns zum Verkauf gelistet werden, beweist uns, dass der Bereich Domain-Handel immer weiter ins Bewusstsein der Domain-Inhaber dringt. Egal, ob diese die Domains aus privaten oder unternehmerischen Gründen besitzen, es wird registriert, dass es sich bei Domains um wertvolle „virtuelle“ Verkaufsgüter handelt“, so Tim Schumacher, Geschäftsführer der Sedo GmbH.
Die erste bei Sedo zum Verkauf stehende Domain war übrigens „offensiv.de“, tatsächlich verkauft wurde jedoch zuerst die Domain „tulpen.de“ für umgerechnet damals noch günstige 300 EUR.
