The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has recently revealed who has applied for which generic New Top Level Domain names in what is expected to become the largest expansion in the history of the Internet’s Domain Name System.
A total of 1,930 new gTLD applications were received during the application period of the new generic Top-Level Domain program. Among the applications were also applications for film-domains.

One of the potential sponsors of film-domains sees a lot of advantages in film-domains: "The .film namespace will provide benefits over .com and ccTLD alternatives by restricting registration to official owners of film titles and registered industry professionals only.
The .film namespace will:
Provide an intuitive and easy to navigate domain name system
Preserve the legacy of film libraries in perpetuity
Address film piracy and copyright infringement. The .film namespace for industry members only will ensure that no longer will industry members be forced into marketing decisions such as movietitle-themovie.com when they can simplify the situation with movietitle.film instead.
With the .film namespace established, no longer would the industry or consumers be forced to search for films such as E.T. using www.et20.com or Million Dollar Baby using milliondollarbabymovie.warnerbros.com/intro.html as natural and authoritative locations will exist for these on the web."
