Sandvik Coromant exhibit new end mill for composites at JEC

New cutting tool minimizes splintering on CFRP and many other composites

(PresseBox) (Düsseldorf, )
Making its exhibition debut at JEC Europe 2013 (Paris, 12-14 March), the new CoroMill® Plura compression end mill for composites is likely to be of great interest to any manufacturer machining CFRP.

Quality enhanced

Showcasing on Smart Hub R9 in Pavilion 1, this innovative new tool combines positive and negative helix design to 'compress' the top and bottom of the component edge. This minimizes any opportunity for splintering, a common defect when machining CFRP and many other types of engineering composites.

Suitable for edge milling applications on material with a minimum thickness of 6 mm, the CoroMill® Plura compression end mill features optimized micro geometry that provides six effective cutting edges for surface finish (Ra) of well under 4 µm and high material removal rates. Conventional up-milling strategies are recommended as these give less vibration. The tool is based on GC1630 grade for extended life, and comes in diameters ranging from 6.0 to 16.0 mm, and lengths (total) from 76 to 100 mm. It is also possible to get this milling cutter with diamond coating.

Much to intrigue

Aside from this groundbreaking new product, visitors to the Sandvik Coromant stand will find a host of additional points of interest. For example, there will be innovative cutting tool solutions for composite hole making and milling, while a technical sales presentation by Mohamed Hammadi, -European Application Specialist Composites, is scheduled for Wednesday 13 March at 16:00. There will also be information available about the company's Composite Application Center in Orléans, France.

All JEC visitors are invited to stop by for an informal chat with one of the company's instantly recognizable Yellow Coat team. Sandvik Coromant experts will be more than happy to discuss any existing or forthcoming composite component machining challenges.
