Unmanned systems can operate autonomously, semi-autonomously or in remote control mode. They relieve the pressure on human beings, and are particularly useful in hazardous, high-risk situations. Moreover, when fitted with different equipment kits and subsystems, they can perform in a wide variety of different roles. Examples here include tactical surveillance, CBRN detection, transport operations, casualty evacuation and deployment as a mobile radio relay stations or effector platform.
The Rheinmetall approach to a Multi-Mission Unmanned Ground Vehicle System envisages the use of three basic components: a tried-and-tested robotic multipurpose vehicle platform, into which a subsystem or system of subsystems is integrated in accordance with user requirements, and finally a command centre, where operations can be planned, controlled, analysed and evaluated.
As an example of its approach to system design, at IDEX 2017 Rheinmetall is presenting a Multi-Mission UGV platform, teamed with the Sensor Command and Control Planning Suite (SC2PS), the Düsseldorf-based Group’s operationally proven command support tool.
