The Porsche 911 Carrera has been moving car enthusiasts for generations unlike any other sports car. The current model from the successful series launched in 1963 stands out from its predecessor series with its considerably increased length, width and flatness. And more light-weight: the weight of the bodywork alone has been reduced by 45 kilograms. Light-weight construction and aerodynamic top performances are also put in practice in the visual highlight of the Carrera models: the variably extendable rear spoiler. Polymer specialist REHAU produces the multifunctional component at its production locations Viechtach, Brake and Moravska Trebova.
For the globally operating development partner with its headquarters in Rehau/Upper Franconia, this is the second large order of visual parts for the so-called flexible rear spoiler produced for a Porsche model series after the Porsche Panamera. "We are happy about the trust placed in us again with this", says Niklas Braun, Head of the Automotive Executive Board at REHAU. "We managed to prove our development know-how, highest quality standards and our light-weight construction expertise once again."
The engineers of the participating companies REHAU, Porsche and Moldware miraculously achieved a 20 percent weight saving during the joint development of the rear spoiler. The complex, variably extendable component consisting of a painted upper part and an optical fibre reinforced, grained armature, is, however, wider than that of the predecessor model. "It is not only the eye-catcher of the considerably more distinct rear of the new 911Carrera but it is also the key element of aerodynamic optimisation", explains Oliver Trautz, the person responsible for the project at REHAU. "The width of the active area has grown considerably compared to the preceding model. Enormous aerodynamic forces attack here, which is a huge challenge in terms of functionality and inherent stability of the component ", Trautz continues. According to him, the REHAU developers managed to achieve optimum dimensional stability with the help of an optical fibre reinforced polymer connection in the armature even under the most difficult load simulations for example at extreme temperatures of plus 90 °C down to minus 40°C.
REHAU also set the highest level of perfection for its colour shade management. It is a matter of course that the surface of the rear spoiler in the colour of the vehicle is exactly matched to the paint of the adjacent bodywork components in terms of structure and colour shade. The space to the other retained exterior trims has to measure the minimum joint width here.
Challenges like these spur us on. In addition to the rear spoiler, REHAU also developed the fresh-air grill attached onto the trunk lid consisting of a grained armature and painted ribs for the Porsche 911 Carrera. They are produced together with the rear spoiler components at the German locations Viechtach and Brake as well as Moravska Trebova, Czech Republic. The entire scope of delivery is delivered just-in-sequence to the Porsche assembly line in Zuffenhausen.
