Swiss Technology Award 2007: Smallest Format Factory vom CSEM basiert auf dem QNX Neutrino RTOS

Klein, kleiner, am kleinsten. Der Trend vieler Produkte, wie Handys oder Digitalkameras, hin zu Mini-Formaten macht deren Fertigung immer schwieriger. Das Schweizer CSEM, ein privates Forschungszentrum für Elektronik und Mikrotechnologie, erkannte die Problematik und entwickelte eine Fabrik im Kleinstformat. Jetzt wurde die "Smallest Format Factory" mit dem Swiss Technology Award 2007 ausgezeichnet. Die Mini-Fabrik besteht aus mehreren Robotermodulen, die mit dem Echtzeit-Betriebssystem QNX Neutrino von QNX Software Systems betrieben werden. Das QNX Neutrino RTOS kommt dabei auf PC/104-Rechnern zum Einsatz, die die integrierte Steuerung der einzelnen Robotermodule übernehmen.

Das CSEM realisierte das Projekt in Kooperation mit der Hochschule für Technik und Informatik in Biel innerhalb von zweieinhalb Jahren mit einem vierköpfigen Team aus Ingenieuren und technischen Wissenschaftlern. Während der Entwicklung der Roboter musste das Team mehrere Iterationen durchführen. Das Ziel lautete, drei Zyklen pro Sekunde und eine Genauigkeit von fünf Mikrometern bei Mikrokomponenten.
Das QNX Neutrino RTOS, mit seinem kleinem Footprint und seiner Fähigkeit, kritische Aufgaben im Bereich weniger Mikrosekunden durchzuführen, erfüllte die Anforderungen an das Projekt perfekt.

Seine hohe Zuverlässigkeit und seine Echtzeitfähigkeiten machen es zu einem starken Partner in der Mikrotechnologie", sagt Dr. Marcel Honegger, Projektleiter Robotik am CSEM. "Roboter gesteuerte Montageprozesse arbeiten schnell und äußerst präzise. Diese Idee im Mini-Format umzusetzen, hat uns gefordert und stößt auf großes Interesse."

"Wir freuen uns sehr mit dem CSEM über diese Auszeichnung. Wieder einmal mehr hat sich das QNX Neutrino RTOS bei einem schwierigen Einsatz bewiesen", sagt Norbert Struck, Managing Director Central Europe bei QNX Software Systems. "Hohe Geschwindigkeiten und eine große Präzision auf äußerst kleinem Raum sind eine extreme Herausforderung für ein Betriebssystem. QNX Neutrino war von Beginn an darauf ausgelegt, solche Anforderungen zu erfüllen, bei gleichzeitig extrem hoher Zuverlässigkeit."

Zur Darstellung kompletter Produktionslinien in der "Smallest Format Factory" kombinierte das CSEM Team mehrere Robotermodule mit einer Größe von jeweils 12 x 12 x 20 Zentimetern. Die Robotermodule enthalten je ein Komponententransfer- und Bestückungssystem sowie verschiedene Geräte für den Produktionsprozess, wie beispielsweise ein Leimverteilungssystem.
