Planned Advance - Safety's POLYMILL shoulder milling cutter for titanium and superalloys

Safety are at the EMO in Hannover from September 19th to September 24th: Hall 6, Booth A36

(PresseBox) (Rodgau, )
Whether roughing or finishing: The new POLYMILL cutter from Safety offers maximum performance when surface and shoulder milling especialy in exotic aerospace materials. Thanks to its precision-ground inserts (PM15) and the innovative clamping system SideLok(tm) (see Info Box), Polymill offers high feed rates and large chip volumes.

The closeness of the pitch is made possible by the new insert clamping system. More teeth allow for higher feed rates without impairing reliability. According to the manufacturer, the processing time can be reduced by 30 % to 50 % relative to comparable cutters. The high table feed does not however, remain without consequences for heat build-up. As a countermeasure, the clamping screw is provided with a coolant hole. Coolant passes through the integrated flushing system of the tool body right to the cutting edge. Even at high cutting rates, optimum removal of process heat is thus guaranteed - which is gentle on the inserts and increases tool life.

The POLLYMILL is very adaptable thanks to the possibility of useing different insert radius options from 0.4 to 6 mm in the same cutter body. Main aerospace application area is for shoulder and face milling of Titainium and Inconel., with high quality surface finishes due to specialy designed insert geometrys. The inserts are available in grades 1130, 2003, 5020, 5050 and 8030 and have a positive cutting geometry. In addition, the insert geometry can be adapted so that the cutters can also be used in the machining of die-cast parts or drop forgings.

The standard program of the POLYMILL includes three shank types (cylindrical, screw-in and arbor cutters) and is available in diameters from 32 to 80 mm.

Revolutionary ICP clamping system SideLok(tm)

Thanks to precise cutting geometry and innovative high-performance cutting grades, the new POLYMILL ensures outstanding tool service life. Altimatly chip thickness limits feed rate and the key to higher feed rates is a closer pitch. To place even more teeth on the tool body, Safety has developed the new, patented insert clamping system SideLok(tm) for inserts. Thus the number of teeth can be increased. The rigid insert clamping system is very stable and offers up to twice as much space for inserts in the tool body. The greatly increased number of teeth offers significantly higher table feed (vf), decisively affected by the feed per tooth (fz) and the number of teeth (z) - which also increases productivity by up to 50 %. Even the set-up times are markedly minimized by the clamping system: Without loosening the screws completely, the ICPs can be indexed very easily, worn- inserts plates are replaced quickly.

If emulsion / cooling lubricant is used for targeted removal of the process heat, with SideLok(tm) it can be passed directly through the clamp screw to the cutting edge. Via an internal coolant supply, each insert is connected to the cooling system. The optimum cooling of the cutting edges reduces early cracking and abrasive wear on the inserts. The optimum heat dissipation also reduces crater wear.
