With more than 4 million available book titles, journals, serial publications and online databases, beck-shop.de is one of the most distinguished online specialised bookstores in Germany and stands in the professional specialised book tradition of the C. H. BECK publishing house, one of Germany’s largest publishers of books and magazines. The Munich-based company founded in 1763 looks back not only on 250 years of company history steeped in tradition but also relies on innovative business models and technologies to best meet the needs of specialised book customers. It was recently awarded the coveted 1st place as customer champion 2014, confirming the extremely high service level of this specialised media shop.

Offer personalisation as customer service
An extensive range of products such as the one offered by specialised bookstore beck-shop.de places high demands on customer service. In order to better advise its customers amidst the wealth of products and to take advantage of the full cross-selling potential, the publishing house made the decision to use the realtime personalisation solution, prudsys Realtime Decisioning Engine (prudsys RDE for short). The prudsys RDE is one of the leading solutions for real time analytics, forecasts and intelligent recommendations in Europe. More than 200 shops around the world rely on the solutions from realtime analytics specialist prudsys.

Find what is truly interesting
By implementing the prudsys RDE, in particular the prudsys RDE | Recommendations and prudsys RDE | Search modules in the shop at www.beck-shop.de, products are recommended and search results displayed to customers at different points of the ordering and purchasing process, starting with category overviews and product detail pages right down to the search, that actually correspond to what customers are interested in purchasing. Previously, only non-personalised recommendations were displayed for visitors and customers. In other words, they only saw products that other customers had bought together with the respective product. Now with the prudsys RDE it is possible to significantly increase recommendation quality based on customer search, click and purchase patterns. The system then automatically determines meaningful product combinations based on current click patterns, related products and the evaluation of historical purchase data and generates them as purchase recommendations at different points in the order and purchase process. The self-learning prudsys RDE determines customer reaction to the recommended products in real time and modifies the quality of its own recommendations based on those reactions.

Faster, result-oriented search
To lead customers more quickly and effectively to the product they are searching for, the prudsys RDE | Search module was integrated in addition to the prudsys RDE | Recommendations module. The search consists of a combination of classic search functionality and high-performance processes for personalised search results such as the ones used for personalised product recommendations. The search results are then tailored to the appropriate user profile based on the transaction and generated based on sales.

Personalised requirements
One challenge was in generating recommendations for products that had not yet been clicked on or purchased, as there was a lack of statistical data. By the same token, certain products were not to be taken into account when calculating the recommendation. In such cases, the prudsys RDE works with appropriate filters as well as innovative algorithms and processes that learn from things like category and attribute association.
