For both, software producers and users, mobility and accessibility are the hot topics of the season. Trade visitors at this year´s major spring fairs, the ITB in Berlin and the Internorga in Hamburg, were accordingly excited about the new products presented by the German hotel software company: protel introduced "protel for iPad", the first hotel management system that can be used entirely on a mobile device; the web apps "protel Cockpit" and "protel Voyager" enable hotel managers, teams and guests to access, enter and edit information and data wherever they are and whenever they need to.
Mobile applications may indeed revolutionise the hotel's workflows and processes: As soon as managers and teams are liberated from the fetters of a stationary workstation, innovative concepts arise: Why should a guest go the front desk, if the front desk could come to him? Why not allow the guest to check in while on the way to the hotel? Why shouldn't the revenue manager be able to enter the latest numbers into the system while attending a sales meeting? Wouldn't it be useful to enter answers to a customer survey almost unnoticed while personally talking to the guest? And wouldn't it be great customer service to enable guests to enter or extend their stay or make dinner reservations on their own?
The enthusiasm for mobile applications is to some extend owned to the specific "touch and feel" of Apple products, which makes working with the graphical user interface of the protel App a sheer aesthetic pleasure: Once you've swiped through calendar days in the room plan, it's not likely you'll put down your iPad anytime soon. After seeing the app, some trade fair visitors even considered getting rid of stationary workstations all together. However, protel makes a point of holding the doors open to a variety of platforms, not only for mobile devices. protel Product Manager Susen Stanberger explains: "It is our goal to reach as many customers as possible no matter which terminal equipment they are using. It is most important to us to enable our customers to access our software anytime and anywhere and to provide the flexibility, mobility and accessibility hotel managers, teams and guests need to go with the time."
