pmdtechnologies shows Project Tango Tablet Development Kit with integrated pmd depth sensors at CES 2015

New Tango tablet development kits based on pmd technology are now ready for OEMs to enable mobile devices 3-dimensional perception in real-time

(PresseBox) (Siegen, Germany / Las Vegas, USA, )
The new tablet development kit showed by pmd at CES 2015 in Las Vegas provides all the sensor features of a Project Tango tablet - like motion tracking based on a fish-eye camera - but uses pmd's small and low-power depth sensors to complete the sensor set necessary to give the device a human-scale understanding of its environment. pmdtechnologies is an official Project Tango partner and by modifying the existing Project Tango Tablet Development Kit, a pmd depth sensor was integrated to successfully validate pmd's technology within the Project Tango platform. pmd's technology enables robust depth sensing based on the "Time-of-Flight" principle, meaning it does not require a stereo baseline; consequently, creating a tablet is just the beginning. Given the very small form factors of depth cameras enabled by pmd's technology, smartphones, with integrated depth sensors, are now very possible.

"We are considering these tablets not the final outcome, but more so just the beginning of a journey which will ultimately make depth sensing in mobile devices as commonplace as 2D cameras," said Dr. Bernd Buxbaum, CEO of pmdtechnologies GmbH.

The Project Tango Tablet Development Kits with integrated pmd technology are shown for the first time during CES by pmd; interested OEMs are encouraged to schedule a meeting to learn how to get access to those tablets and the technology.
