In an interview, PBS Software managing director Günther Reichling and head of development Professor Dr. Detlev Steinbinder recommend a cost-efficient combined concept consisting of SAP HANA and column-oriented PBS nearline storage solutions. The required main memory capacity can be reduced significantly when using a stringent Information Lifecycle Management concept that also includes consistent data archiving. Apart from the load on the main memory the costs are also minimized considerably. Due to the column-based technology, a very fast access to archived data is achieved. For example, reconciliation in SAP Financial Accounting used to take several days but today can be performed in just seconds. "That was unimaginable just a few years ago", says Detlev Steinbinder, who also points out completely new options for the reporting of archived data. The costs for the NLS solutions are kept within limits as the Sybase IQ database technology uses traditional hard disks.
PBS has been developing column-based nearline solutions for some years that have proved themselves in practice at many SAP customers. In addition to corresponding solutions for SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse, PBS is currently the only provider for the use of column-based nearline storage technology in SAP ERP. Due to their many years of experience with the integrated access to archived data Günther Reichling is relaxed when faced with the ever-increasing flood of data in SAP systems: "We will be able to handle far larger volumes of data", is his conclusion.
