Panasonic Launches Offset for Life Scheme

Hamburg, (PresseBox) - Business customers across UK can offset carbon produced by operation of professional projectors, aiding greenhouse gas emission reduction projects in Turkey, China and Ghana.

Panasonic AVC Systems Europe (PAVCSE) has today unveiled Offset For Life, a carbon offsetting program for its professional projector range. The programme, launching in UK will allow Panasonic's customers to offset carbon emitted through the usage of their projectors, enabling the reduction of their net contribution to climate change.

Customers will be able to opt-in to the programme when purchasing professional projectors from Panasonic, allowing the carbon offset to be added to their own corporate carbon reduction targets, as well as making a positive contribution to their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Panasonic is working in partnership with ClimateCare; one of the leading carbon offset companies in the world, and will be supporting three of its Gold Standard green house gas emission reduction projects:

- Wind farm in Turkey: The project consists of 54 wind turbines, providing a total installed capacity of 135MW on Gokcedag mountain between Bahçe and Hasanbeyli in the Osmaniye Province, Turkey. In addition to the energy benefits, the project also employs local people, sources local materials and components and helps Turkey meet its growing energy demands

- Wind farm in Ningxia Yinyi, northern China: The wind farm is expected to generate approximately 105 GWh of clean renewable electricity each year in a country where 80 percent of electricity comes from coal power, as well as stimulating local employment

- The provision of efficient cook stoves in Ghana: Most families in Ghana cook with inefficient charcoal 'coal-pots'. The project replaces these coal pots with an efficient stove, known as the Gyapa, which reduces charcoal consumption by 25 percent. The stoves also reduce indoor smoke levels which can cause debilitating illnesses Calculation Methodology and Independent Assurance by PwC

Through taking responsibility for and offsetting emissions produced during the operation of their projectors, customers will be contributing to sustainable development in the local communities in which the projects occur as well as reducing the rate of climate change. To offset emissions accurately, Panasonic has created a carbon emissions calculator into which customers input product usage and running hours per year. It then takes into account the power consumption during various operation modes, as well as the estimated lifetime which is based on the typical replacement cycle for Professional AV equipment.

Customers can choose to offset for the typical replacement cycle (three years) or go above and beyond this, by offsetting the carbon emitted for a projector running for five years. Panasonic engaged PwC to verify, under international assurance standards, the application of the carbon emissions calculator methodology. Independent assurance by a major auditor provides confidence in the accuracy of the emissions calculations.

Christian Sokcevic, General Manager Sales and Marketing at Panasonic AVC Systems Europe comments, "We are committed to not only reducing the impact of our own business activities on the environment, but also creating business-styles that can help make the best use of resources and energy for others. The Offset for Life programme is another major step towards this. By signing up, our customers will be able to ensure their own carbon footprints are reduced, as well as help contribute to more sustainable lifestyles in Turkey, China and Ghana."

In addition, in September 2010, Panasonic Europe announced a suite of new ambitious ecology pledges and targets to be achieved by the end of FY2012. Key to this is its 'eco ideas' for Business-styles pledges, which aim to create and pursue business-styles that make the best use of resources and energy by reducing CO2 emissions during the production process. From March 2007 to March 2010 Panasonic has globally reduced its CO2 emissions in manufacturing by 300,000 tonnes.

Panasonic is also striving continually to ensure its product ranges, including its projectors, are as energy efficient as possible. As a consequence of this approach, its new projectors offer significantly higher performance while at the same time consuming less energy. For example, the 2010 models of Panasonic's 10,000 Lumen projectors consume 57 percent less energy than models produced in the year 2000.
