Leading conference on fuels, chemicals and polymers from CO2 utilization in Cologne

Big visions – and real potential

(PresseBox) (Hürth, )
The utilization of carbon dioxide, among experts referred to as Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCU), is gaining momentum. Promising new developments will be presented at the “5th Conference on Carbon Dioxide as Feedstock for Fuels, Chemistry and Polymers“, 6-7 December 2016, Maternushaus, Cologne (Germany)

In recent years, the first commercial production of CO2-based polymers has been launched, several additional technologies have progressed so far to allow production on an industrial scale in the near future – with advanced biotechnology and chemical catalysis. At the same time renewable energy from solar, wind and hydro is becoming cheaper each year. The latest plants at favourable locations are already at the same price level as fossil energy sources and even below. A perfect situation for combining cheap and abundant renewables with carbon utilization to store energy, to produce renewable fuels and chemicals. Renewable energy and CCU will reshape the energy system of the future and the chemical industry, too.

At the “5th Conference on Carbon Dioxide as Feedstock for Fuels, Chemistry and Polymers“ leading players will showcase enhanced and new applications using CO2 as feedstock. The conference will feature a mixture of keynote speakers, oral presentations, poster presentations and an exhibition. After four very successful years in Essen, the conference moves to a new venue in Cologne in 2016 to have room for growth: The organizer nova-Institute expects more than 250 participants from 30 countries and 20 exhibitors and offers professional match making tools for efficient networking between the experts from industry, policy and research. Three months before the event, 60 participants have already registered (www.co2-chemistry.eu/tnlist). The first ten exhibition booths (6 sqm) are free for registered participants.

The conference is under the patronage of Svenja Schulze, Minister of Innovation, Science and Research of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The conference is sponsored by Covestro (DE), a world-leading manufacturer of high-tech polymer materials for key industries, and cooperatively supported by the premium partner EnergyAgency.NRW.

A short programme overview (www.co2-chemistry.eu/...):

The conference will start with the session “Policy and Visions”. Speakers from Climate KIC (EU), Covestro (DE), World Council on Industrial Biotechnology (CH), SCOT-Project (NL) and University of Sheffield (UK) will share and discuss their visions with the audience. Additional speakers from the European Commission, Federal Ministry of Education and Research (DE) and the solar industry are invited.

The session “Artificial Photosynthesis & H2 Generation” will show the latest developments in these crucial technologies for CCU. Speakers from Uppsala University (SE) and Evonik (DE) have confirmed their presentations.

On the second day, the session “CO2-based Chemicals & Polymers” will show first implementation of CO2-based polymer production and what’s coming up next. Speakers represent among others Kiverdi (US), Phytonix (US), VITO (BE) and Covestro (DE).

The conference will conclude with a session on “CO2-based Fuels” for aviation and automotive. In the last two years, impressive technological improvements were made and entered the market. Pioneers from the following companies will present: LanzaTech (NZ, US), Syngip (NL), Methanol Institute (NL), Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe (DE), sunfire (DE), Electrochaea (DE), Bauhaus Luftfahrt (DE), ECN (NL), Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (DE) and InfraServ Knapsack (DE).
