MSC Technologies reaches Volume Milestone for SMARC 2.0 Modules

(PresseBox) (Stutensee, )
MSC Technologies, a company of Avnet (NYSE: AVT), has announced that its production volume of Smart Mobility ARChitecture SMARC™ 2.0 modules has reached five-digit quantities ahead of plan, and is showing indications of even stronger growth for the next year. MSC Technologies played a crucial role in the SGeT (Standardization Group for embedded Technologies) workgroup SDT.01 that devised the new SMARC 2.0 specification, and was the first company to show a working SMARC 2.0 module sample on the Embedded World 2016.

Today, MSC’s growing portfolio of SMARC modules includes both ARM-based and x86-based modules. The SM2S-IMX6 module uses the short form-factor 82 x 50 mm and covers all single, dual- and quad-core SOCs from NXP’s i.MX6 family including the QuadPlus and DualPlus variants. The new Intel® Atom™ E3900 (formerly “Apollo Lake”) CPU is used on both a short form factor module and a full-size SMARC product which measures 82 x 80 mm. All Atom E3900 processors are supported as well as the Pentium and Celeron variants. While the smaller E3900 module comes with up to 8GB DRAM and up to 64GB eMMC Flash memory, the larger product in addition features up to 64GB SATA Flash as well as an optional wireless radio device providing WLAN, BT and NFC capabilities. Further modules are in various stages of development at MSC, and will further widen the company’s SMARC 2.0 portfolio next year.

Jens Plachetka, manager product business unit board platforms, MSC Technologies, says, “When we joined the SGeT SDT.01 workgroup in 2015, we had the clear vision in mind to create the best possible module standard for low-power ARM and x86-based processors. Today we see that our customers are sharing this vision by designing SMARC 2.0 modules into their applications for the industrial, medical, transportation and POS/POI markets. In the past 12 months, SMARC 2.0 has shown outstanding volume growth figures, but with the new products based on the Atom E3900 processors reaching production state next year, these figures will certainly be surpassed in 2018.”
