Dabei will auch van Hooydonk auf die typische BMW-Niere in der Front der Elektroautos nicht verzichten. "Es hilft, dem Kunden zu erklären, um was für ein Fahrzeug es sich handelt. Beim i3 haben wir uns eine Interpretation des Nieren-Themas einfallen lassen, um die Wiedererkennbarkeit sicherzustellen. Aber die Nieren sind hier geschlossen."
Dagegen hat VW-Designchef Walter de Silva die Entscheidung des VW-Konzerns unterstrichen, der Elektroflotte kein eigenes Design zu geben. "Wenn man um jeden Preis der Geschwindigkeit von Trends folgt, dann läuft man Gefahr, ein Auto zu designen, das man nach einem Jahr vergessen kann und das schnell altert." Alternative Antriebskonzepte brächten keine neue Designsprache: "Die E-Mobilität ist zwar etwas spezifisch, aber sie wird unsere Design-Kriterien nicht ändern."
